Chief Justice
John G. Roberts. Jr.- Born Thursday, January 27, 1955. He is the chief justice of the United States court. He was nominated by Bush and he has seat number 1. He was sworn in and commisioned on Thursday, September 29, 2005. He had a well paying job before being nominated by Bush. Now he has the most important job in the Supreme Court.
Associate Justices
Antonin Scalia- Of Italian decent, Scalia was born Wednesday, March 11, 1936. He grew up in New Jersey. He is very well known for his character and intelligence. He is very much confrontational and has a very hard demeanor. He adds an interesting flare to the court house. Although unpredictable he is one to look out for. He was commissioned on Thursday, September 25, 1986. And was sworn in Friday, September 26, 1986. He has seat number 10 and has been in service for 28 years, 3 months and 17 days.
Anthony M. Kennedy- Born July 23, 1936 in California. He was Reagan's third candidate to fill a spot as an associate justice. Although, it was very well known that Kennedy was not Reagan's first choice he has been a very hard working man and ultimately deserved to be on the supreme court. He is not very outspoken but he has given very influential opinions in very well known cases. He holds seat number two and was commissioned Thursday, February 11, 1988 and was sworn in Thursday, February 18. 1988.
Clarence Thomas- Born Wednesday, June 23, 1948, Thomas was born into poverty. He was born in the very racist south and lived in a very unfortunate part of town. But with the help of his mother he was able to survive and then moved in with his grandfather. His grandfather taught his many things but the main lesson was the importance of education. He then left an all black school and went to a private all white school. Although he has been racially persecuted because of his color, Thomas did not let that impact his life. He is now holding seat number 11 and was commisioned Wednesday, October 16,1991 and sworn in October 23, 1991.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg- Born Wednesday, March 15, 1933. She is a very important judge who has been contributing for a long time. She was appointed by Clinton because of her charisma and ability to share her values in a respectable manner. She is also a known role model for feminist because of her ability to combat sexism when she was growing up. Many people have a lot a respect for Ginsburg, and appreciate the role she contributes to the court. Embarissingly she has fallen asleep during many speeches but that just adds to her favorability. She holds seat number 7 and was commissioned Thursday, August 5, 1993 and sworn in Tuesday, August 10, 1993. She has thus far served 21 years.
Stephen G. Breyer- Born Monday, August 15, 1938. Breyer is well known for his attitude and unpredictable demeanor. He was very wealthy growing up but was a relitevly simple man. He is very honest and some people mistake that as being cynical. It is known that Clinton, the person who nominated him did not find Breyer very appealing but he was ultimately his second nomination. Many people dont know how to pin point Breyers views but he has had a very important contribution to the court. He holds seat number 3 and was comissioned August 2, 1994 and was sworn in August 3, 1994.
Samuel A. Alito, Jr.- Born Saturday, April 1, 1950. He holds seat number nine. From the very start of his career he was known as very well qualified.He is known for having controversial views, one example is his view on abortion. He is also known for his past as unfavoring the poor. He has a lot of experience and it is shown in his opinions in cases and having a very strict view on cases. He was commisioned on January 31, 2006 and sworn in that same day.
Sonia Sotomayor- Born June 25, 1954 serving since August 2009. She is the 111th appointment to the Court, has the distinction of being its first justice of Hispanic heritage, its third female justice, and its twelfth Roman Catholic justice. Sotomayor shares with John Roberts and Elena Kagan being among the youngest justices on the Supreme Court.
Elena Kagan- Born Thursday, April 28, 1960. Was Obamas second nomination. She is the fourth woman to serve on the high court. She has an distinguishing amount of experience and has been a very important figure in politics. She is very outspoken and has very different views from Sonia Sotomayor. A very intriguing woman with much to say and is very active in the court, She hold seat number 6 and was commissioned August 6, 2010 and sworn in Saturday, August 7, 2010.
